Working principles

Exam first, then diagnosis

In pediatric neurology, most mistakes come from a rushed diagnosis. Trembling in a baby's sleep is not a seizure, and a schoolchild's inattention is not always ADHD. The diagnosis rests on the developmental history, the exam and, when indicated, an EEG or imaging study.

Medication only when indicated

Many conditions, such as benign sleep myoclonus, shuddering attacks, simple febrile seizures and early stuttering, do not need medication. When medication is needed, the dose, the duration and the monitoring are planned in advance.

The parent is part of the team

The exam takes place with a parent present. The results, the plan and when to seek urgent care are explained in plain language. What to watch for at home is given in writing.

Early support

In developmental delay, stuttering, autism spectrum disorder and cerebral palsy, early intervention changes the outcome. That is why a child who raises concern is examined rather than told “let's wait, maybe it will pass,” and, when needed, a plan is built together with a speech-language therapist, a psychologist and a physical therapist.
